In June 1963, Alabama Gov. George Wallace, in defiance of federal court rulings striking down segregation, stood in a doorway at the University of Alabama to stop black students from enrolling. Some contemporary conservative leaders are following in Wallace's footsteps by rejecting the Supreme Court's legalization of same-sex marriage and trying to block its implementation.
