Defend democracy in the South.


After a January 2000 fracas with police near the Charleston shipping docks, five members of the black-led International Longshoremen's Association union were singled out for felony convictions; South Carolina's attorney general even compared them to the 9/11 World Trade Center terrorists. After the rise of an international solidarity campaign, the state freed the dock workers on lesser misdemeanor charges.
