Defend democracy in the South.

A three-judge panel of the North Carolina Court of Appeals recently rejected the defendants' motion to dismiss a libel lawsuit over false claims of voter fraud. The defendants are the Pat McCrory Committee Defense Fund, formed in November 2016 to fight the result of a close election that saw the one-term Republican governor (at left) lose to Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper, and the law firm Holtzman Vogel, headed by Virginia state Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel. The firm helped McCrory's organization lodge the controversial election protests at local election boards across North Carolina, and partner Jason Torchinsky (right) represented the Defense Fund at the time of the filings. Neither he nor McCrory are personally named in the suit, but four other Holtzman Vogel attorneys are. (McCrory photo by Hal Goodtree via Flickr; Torchinsky photo by Eric Brown via Flickr.)
