The legal, real estate, investment, and oil and gas industries are among those that have contributed the most to the U.S. senators who were part of the effort to overturn the outcome of the presidential election. Among the companies that back spending groups which in turn have supported the Senate's election deniers are Altria Group, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Noble Energy, and Walt Disney. There's growing pressure on companies to reconsider their giving.

Following revelations that several protesters at a fossil fuel lease auction in Colorado were undercover law enforcement agents acting on information from the oil and gas industry, an environmental group has submitted Freedom of Information Act requests to the federal agencies responsible for leasing to learn more about surveillance of climate activists.

Most of the $1.4 billion in fines and penalties that Transocean has agreed to pay for its negligence in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster will be sent to the Gulf Coast region to fund environmental restoration work.
