Katrina Timeline Belies White House Spin

In the wake of the universally-condemned response to Katrina, the New York Times reported last Sunday that the White House was rolling out a carefully-crafted PR campaign "to move the blame for the slow response to Louisiana state officials."

There's plenty to criticize in the response of local leaders, but the Bush Administration's overly-eager attempt to shirk responsibility just looks cowardly.

It's also wrong. Think Progress is constructing a timeline which punches gaping holes in major parts of the Bush version of events.

The central claim of the White House is that local officials -- Louisiana Governor Blanco and New Orleans Mayor Nagin, both Democrats -- made no attempt to request federal intervention before, during and after the storm. But TP's timeline shows this just isn't true:

FRIDAY, AUGUST 26

MORNING - BUSH CALLS SECRETARY CHERTOFF TO DISCUSS IMMIGRATION: "I spoke to Mike Chertoff today - he's the head of the Department of Homeland Security.
