Sara Evans has been active in the civil-rights, anti-war, and the women’s movements in the South for many years. This article is adapted from a chapter in her manuscript, “Personal Politics: The Roots of Women’s Liberation in the Civil-Rights Movement and the New Left, ’’ to be published by A. A. Knopf.
