As in the South of the 19th century, we have a massive group among us willing to throw democracy away in order to assure their ascendancy. With a dominant political party committed to autocracy, we're treading new ground — at least new ground in modern times.

Since a white supremacist who waved the Confederate flag gunned down nine African Americans in a Charleston church last month, battles have raged across the South over the future of Confederate monuments. Some Confederate apologists are claiming that a 1958 law gives Confederate veterans, and thus the monuments to them, equal status to U.S. veterans and their memorials. They're wrong.

It was 50 years ago this week that President Johnson delivered an address to Congress calling for passage of the Voting Rights Act. The speech is regarded as the best of his administration -- and one of the finest pieces of presidential oratory in history.
